Pros and Cons of Chemically Straightening Your Hair

Consider the pros and cons of chemically straightening your hair if you have curly or wavy hair and long for soft, silky, straight hair. You probably thought about and/or tried a variety of alternatives, including wrapping your hair, ironing it and having it professionally straightened with a flat iron. Chemical straightening is probably the method that provides the best and longest lasting results; however, as with anything, there are advantages and disadvantages to this method.

Advantages

Chemicals used for straightening your hair are designed to relax the curl for an extended period of time. Professional hair straightening lasts for months. Once your hair is straightened using this method, you do not have to constantly blow dry your hair. Since heat damages your hair, this is a definite plus. Let your hair air dry. Styling your hair is much easier, as it is not prone to snarls and tangles.

Disadvantages

Chemicals damage your hair; they also damage your skin if you accidentally get the chemical solution on your skin. Some of the chemicals are even hazardous when inhaled. To minimize these risks, it is best to have chemical straightening done by a professional. Of course, there is a cost involved and that cost is expensive, depending on where you have the job done. Also, as your hair begins to grow out, it starts to look frizzy. If you want to keep your hair straight, have it chemically straightened periodically. Some straightening procedures stipulate that you cannot wash your hair or tie it back in any way for a certain time period, which is inconvenient. Some also suggest that you utilize certain shampoos and conditioners that keep your hair straight for as long as possible, and these products are often pricey.

Having your hair professionally chemically straightened provides you with silky, straight hair for months for an attractive and easy-to-style look. Limit your contact with the chemicals to avoid damage to your hair, skin and respiratory system. Also, maintain your hair by using the appropriate products and have it straightened periodically.
